Can you sleep?  If you said no, you’re certainly not alone.  Sleeplessness in one form of another affects quite a lot of the population, and this includes not being able to fall asleep or being able to fall asleep but then waking up during the night for no reason.  But why worry about reasons for insomnia?  Shouldn’t you just take a pill when you can’t sleep, or won’t this problem just go away on its own as you get older?  It would be nice if things could be solved that easily and certainly there are medical options for those who can’t sleep.  But if you can pinpoint your own reasons for insomnia then you may be able to fix this problem on your own, safely and without complications.

So what are some common reasons for insomnia?  Stress obviously would be one of them.  When you’re stressed and anxious, you may be distracted during the day with your other responsibilities so you don’t think much about your circumstances.  But at night, everything quiets down and you now can think about anything.  Unfortunately the mind then often wanders toward disquieting and distressing thoughts, and these are typical reasons for insomnia.  While it’s not a good idea to leave a television or radio running to distract yourself while you’re trying to get to sleep, you might consider reading or doing a light crossword puzzle right before bed to distract yourself.

Other reasons for insomnia include physical problems such as digestive disorders, pain, headaches, and arthritis.  Some of these problems require a doctor’s intervention but others can be addressed by the sufferer.  For instance, many problems with digestive disorders can be fixed with some changes to one’s diet.  Eating smaller portions and being careful of things that are hard to digest such as protein and dairy products can help.  These other reasons for insomnia can sometimes be addressed as well.  For instance, back pain can sometimes be fixed with simple stretching routines and by minding one’s posture.  If you sit slumped over a computer all day, consider how you can change your environment.  Try yoga or a few minutes of stretching every day.  You may also have other simple fixes you can do for minor aches and pains, and all of which can help with sleeplessness.  Don’t dismiss these simple reasons for insomnia as they can often contribute to difficulty getting to sleep.

Understanding your reasons for insomnia is the only way to actually fix the problem once and for all.  If you don’t get to the root causes you’ll probably never get the problem take care of permanently.  You may also make your health worse if you ignore it or allow it to continue.  However if you do understand your reasons for insomnia you can then address those root causes and finally get some sleep!  So don’t assume that you need medication or think you’re stuck with the problem; get to the root of the problem for lasting relief.
